An air conditioner is a critical appliance during humid tropical summers in Kanyakumari. However, a dusty and neglected air conditioner consumes up to 30% more electricity, experiences frequent compressor overload trips, and blows dusty, allergen-heavy air into the bedroom. Following simple maintenance practices can extend the life of your AC and cut down your utility bills significantly. Here are the core routines to maintain your air conditioner.
This is the single most important maintenance step you can perform yourself. When an AC operates, the indoor blower fan draws room air through fine mesh filters to capture dust. Over two to three weeks of heavy use, these filters get choked. This limits airflow across the evaporator coil, causing ice formation, water dripping, and low cooling. Lift the front panel of your split AC indoor cabinet, slide out the mesh filters, rinse them under running tap water, dry them, and put them back.
The outdoor compressor cabinet requires plenty of space around it to draw fresh air and release hot refrigerant heat. Ensure that no creepers, plants, dry leaves, or boxes block the airflow around the outdoor unit. Maintaining at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides allows the compressor to cool down efficiently, avoiding overheating trips.
During cooling operation, moisture from the indoor room air condenses on the cold coil and collects in a tray below. This water drains out through a PVC pipe. If algae or dust clogs this pipe, the condensation tray overflows, leaking water directly down your indoor walls. Ensure that the outlet end of the drain pipe is free from mud blocks or insect nests.
While washing mesh filters is easy, fine dust particles eventually pass through and stick inside the copper cooling fins, forming a layer of mud. This mud layer requires chemical pressure jet pump cleaning (also known as wet washing) to be flushed out. A professional wet cleaning flushes out deep soot, improving heat transfer and cooling efficiency significantly.
Low refrigerant levels indicate a copper pipe leak. Running an AC with insufficient refrigerant gas places severe pressure on the compressor motor, causing it to overheat and fail prematurely. If you notice thin ice forming on the outdoor brass valves or the AC is blowing room-temperature air, switch it off immediately and check for leaks.
