A refrigerator is the heart of a modern kitchen, running 24/7 to keep your vegetables fresh and meals preserved. When it suddenly stops cooling, it can lead to spoiled food and kitchen chaos. While some issues require immediate professional help, many common cooling failures can be diagnosed or prevented with basic troubleshooting. Here is a guide to the most common refrigerator cooling problems and their solutions.
It sounds simple, but sometimes the thermostat dial is accidentally bumped or turned down by a container, especially in single-door direct cool fridges. Make sure the cooling dial is set to the correct range (usually 'medium' or 3-4 depending on the scale). During hot summers, you may need to increase the setting slightly to compensate for the higher ambient room temperatures.
Condenser coils dissipate heat from the refrigerator as the refrigerant compressor operates. In older fridges, these coils are mounted at the back; in modern double-door units, they are often located at the bottom next to the compressor. If dust, cobwebs, or pet hair coat these coils, the compressor cannot release heat efficiently, forcing it to run continuously without cooling. Unplug the fridge, and gently vacuum or brush the coils once a year.
If the magnetic rubber door gasket is torn, loose, or dirty, warm ambient air from the kitchen will seep into the refrigerator cabinet continuously. This forces the evaporator fan to work harder, forming heavy ice blocks that block the cooling channels. Clean the gasket with soapy water, and perform the "paper money test": close the door on a currency note; if it pulls out easily, your seals are weak and need replacement.
If your freezer compartment is freezing food normally, but the lower refrigerator compartment is warm, the culprit is almost always a failed defrost system. In frost-free fridges, a defrost heater melts ice accumulation from the evaporator coil three to four times a day. If the defrost timer, bimetal thermostat sensor, or heater coil fails, the evaporator coil gets choked with ice, blocking the cool air vents to the lower compartment. Unplugging the fridge for 24 hours to manually melt the ice will temporarily restore cooling, but the faulty sensor must be replaced.
If your refrigerator is warm, you don't hear the compressor running, and instead, you hear a clicking sound every few minutes, the issue is likely a failed PTC start relay or a blown starting capacitor. The starter relay triggers the compressor motor windings. If it fails, the compressor gets warm and trips the thermal overload protector (which creates the clicking sound). Replacing the starter relay is a quick and cheap fix.
